Second international test for Academy

International rugby returns to Welford Road this Sunday when Leicester Tigers Academy host Wales Under-18s. Kick-off is at 2.30pm and admission is free.

Last weekend, Tigers Academy were pipped 19-12 by England Under-18s in their opening international challenge of the season, and expect another good contest against their Welsh visitors this weekend.

Tigers Academy have enjoyed international dates in recent seasons against representative sides from England, Wales, Scotland, France, the USA and Canada, as well as fixtures against club sides throughout the UK, Ireland and France.

“We take it as a compliment that the national squads want to play against us as part of their own competitive programme,” said Tigers Academy manager Neil McCarthy.

“These games allow us to see where our players are in their own development and to play against a national side on your own club ground is very special for all of those players.

“We’re looking forward to Sunday’s game and hopefully having a good-sized crowd at Welford Road to see the team in action.”

Tigers have a good record against Wales Under-18s, with victories in each of the last two years, though they did suffer a 41-17 defeat in the fixture on home turf in February 2011.

With the first-team away to Newcastle Falcons in Aviva Premiership action this weekend, the Welford Road fixture provides a perfect opportunity to enjoy live rugby on home ground and see the next generation of Tigers prospects.

Admission to all supporters is free at the Holland & Barrett Stand turnstiles.
