England secured sixth place in the second leg of the 2017 Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series, held in Lodz, Poland at the weekend.

On day one, an England squad which included Leicester Tigers academy player Ryan Olowofela, finished third in their pool following a win against Italy and two defeats to Russia and Wales.

After opening the second day with defeat by Ireland, England then beat Georgia 22-12 before facing Germany in the play-off for fifth and sixth place, getting off to a strong start with three first-half tries before their rivals fought back to win 29-26.

“It’s been a great weekend for the boys,” England Sevens academy coach Warren Abrahams said. “They came back from ninth place position in Moscow and have worked extremely hard to get that sixth-place finish this week.

“We’re really proud of the squad’s attitude and their intent to build on the lessons that they have learnt since the last tournament.”

The squad was made up of a combination of talent from the England Sevens academy, Premiership academy and universities programme, with England Sevens head coach Simon Amor citing the tournament as an opportunity to identify the next generation of talent to come through the England Sevens pathway.
