Set-piece will be crucial, says Spencer

Will Spencer says a strong set-piece is crucial to ensuring victory over Wasps at Welford Road on Saturday. And despite Wasps’ attacking style, Spencer insists the game will be decided by the battle between the opposing forward packs.

“They can play from anywhere, they’ve got some dangerous runners, especially in the backs. They play a quick, fast tempo game, but for us we need to win the set-piece battle,” he said.

“That’s really key against a side like Wasps. If we can starve them of the ball from scrum and lineouts, it gives our backs a good platform as well.”

"Like us, they probably haven’t reached their potential yet."

Both sides currently sit in the bottom half of the Gallagher Premiership table and will be desperate for a win on Saturday to get their seasons back on track.

Spencer explained that the Tigers squad aren’t allowing themselves to get distracted by what the result would mean for them and are purely focused on their game plan.

“Similarly to us they will be disappointed with how they’ve done in the league so far this year and, like us, they probably haven’t reached their potential yet,” he added.

“For us, we’re not going to think about the pressure, we just want to go out and play how good we can play and if we do that, we’re a very good side and we’ll be a tough team to beat.”

Spencer also said Tigers need to cut out the small errors in their game to be able to reach their potential.

He continued: “It’s more about the little details. We’re happy with our game plan, we’re happy with the way we’re playing when we do play, it’s just about not making the errors and looking after the ball better and putting our game onto the opposition.

“We want to go out this week and be on the right end of the result.”
