Thompson tribute for ‘outstanding’ team-mates

A modest Guy Thompson was quick to pay tribute to his Leicester Tigers team-mates after being named Lumbers Player of the Month for the second time running.

The back-rower, who missed out on playing in Saturday’s final game against Bath Rugby through injury, collected his Lumbers prize on the pitch at half time and revealed to LTTV that he was ‘massively shocked’ to win the award once again.

Thompson beat fellow forward Will Spencer and retiring centre Matt Smith to the prize for his performances against Bristol Bears at home and away to Harlequins, after also being named Player of the Month in April for his heroics at Kingston Park.

“There have been some outstanding players in the last couple of games,” Thompson said.

“I think [George Ford] against Quins away was superb, and Will Spencer has been phenomenal for us up front.

“[The award] is very unexpected, so I’m massively shocked and want to thank everyone who voted very much.”

Each month, fans are asked to pick their top individual performer from a shortlist of three nominated by the Tigers coaching team.

The 32-year-old was awarded his prize – a Lumbers gift voucher – on the Welford Road turf by Dominic Gomersall, managing director of the High Street jewellers.

But fan favourite Thompson, who has enjoyed a strong first year at Welford Road, was quick to turn his attention to next term.

“It’s been a great first year on a personal level, but we’re obviously not happy with how the team has gone,” he continued.

“We’ve just got to make sure that we keep [the good bits] going and take that momentum into next season.”
