Thompson two from two in Lumbers vote

Leicester Tigers supporters have selected back-rower Guy Thompson as the Lumbers Player of the Month for the second month running in the last vote of the season.

Thompson – who also scooped the Newcomer of the Year award at the club’s Supporters Awards Evening earlier this week – beat teammates Matt Smith and Will Spencer to the final prize of 2018/19.

He topped the poll of fans for his performances in Gallagher Premiership rounds 20 and 21 against Bristol Bears and Harlequins, and was announced as the winner at half-time of Tigers’ last match of the season against Bath Rugby.

Thompson’s four turnovers and 16 tackles in the against the Bears were the highlight of an ultimately frustrating afternoon and his nuisance at the breakdown caused a real headache for Quins in Round 21, with the 32-year-old nailing down the Tigers No7 shirt in recent weeks.

His second Player of the Month prize in a row means the season’s winners are now confirmed as club captain Tom Youngs and fellow forwards Harry Wells and David Denton plus backs George Worth, Jonah Holmes, Ben White and George Ford.

Supported by High Street jewellers Lumbers and voted for by Tigers supporters, the monthly award recognises the contributions of individual players to the team throughout the campaign.

Each month, fans are asked to pick their top performer from a shortlist of three players nominated by Tigers head coach Geordan Murphy. The player with the most votes on the Lumbers website will win the award, which is then presented on the Welford Road pitch during half-time of a first-team fixture.
