Leicester Tigers were delighted to share Welford Road matchday with groups from the Rugby 4 All programme on Sunday. The home game in the LV= Cup allowed Tigers to showcase their work with women, girls and Leicester’s multicultural communities both before and during the big match.
Pupils from Mellor Primary School set the ball rolling on the Rugby 4 All celebration by taking part in a tag rugby demonstration in front of parents on the Welford Road pitch on Sunday morning.
Then they joined girls’ groups from John Fernley and Robert Smyth Academy, plus young players who took part in our first all-girls Tigers Rugby Camps this year and players from the city’s university women’s teams for a parade on the pitch at half-time.
Liz Broughton, from Mellor Primary School, said: “It’s very inspirational. We’ve never really been involved in something like this before, but it’s an amazing opportunity to bring families down to Leicester Tigers and they can see the groups enjoying themselves.
“This kind of event really helps promote rugby in schools and for girls of any age to get involved in the sport. It’s a great advert for anyone to give rugby a go.”
On Monday, Tigers welcomed Rugby 4 All groups for a festival of touch rugby on the Welford Road pitch with teams from seven schools, including Welland Park Academy, Limehurst Academy, Beaumont Leys College, Robert Smyth Academy and John Ferneley College.
This event marked the culmination of five weeks of coaching and extra-curricular sessions which engaged more than 200 girls who had never previously played rugby at school.
The Tigers’ Rugby 4 All initiative has been supported by Premiership Rugby and backed by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission to work in promoting diversity and equality in rugby.
Scott Clarke, head of community and trustee of the new Leicester Tigers Foundation, said: “The Leicester Tigers Foundation is committed to making sure that all the groups we work with are inspired by our programmes to seek a better and more positive future, doing more and expecting more from their participation in sport.”
