Tigers chairman welcomes World Cup announcement

Leicester Tigers chairman Peter Tom CBE hailed England's successful 2015 World Cup bid and says he is excited at the prospect of welcoming the tournament to a redeveloped Welford Road.

The IRB Council backed the RFU’s bid to stage the Rugby World Cup for a second time ahead of tenders South Africa and Italy.

Welford Road has been included in the bid as one of ten venues to host pool matches.

Tigers’ home ground has hosted games at two previous World Cups when the then world champions New Zealand defeated Italy 31-21 in 1991, and Tonga and Italy played out a thrilling encounter at the 1999 tournament.

Tigers chairman Tom said: “It is great news for the game and we are particularly delighted at Leicester Tigers to be part of the successful bid.

“The Rugby World Cup is one of the biggest sporting events and it promises to be a fantastic tournament.

“We have hosted World Cup fixtures here at Welford Road in the past and look forward to welcoming some of the three million people expected to attend the tournament to the new-look home of Leicester Tigers.”

The news came as the first seats were being fitted into the giant new Caterpillar Stand, the first stage of the redevelopment of Welford Road.

Tom said: “The first seats going in is a milestone in the construction of the new stand."

The stand will be ready for action at the first home game of the new league season when Guinness Premiership champions Tigers will run out against Newcastle Falcons on Saturday, September 19.

Already more than 60 per cent of the Caterpillar Stand has been sold for the entire season. To book your season ticket contact the Tigers ticket office now by calling 0844 856 1880, log on to the club website www.leicestertigers.com or call into the ticket office at Welford Road.
