Four school teams became the first recipients of Leicester Tigers' prestigious new awards, which aim to reward outstanding achievement in the club's community programmes.

Belvoirdale Community, Measham CofE, Ashby Hill Top and St Clare’s Catholic primary schools received the new Tigers Community Special Achievement Medals for their excellence in this year’s Alliance and Leicester TAG championships.

The four schools reached the finals of the North West Leicestershire area and played against each other at Welford Road before Saturday’s 52-0 win over Benetton Treviso in the Heineken Cup.

St Clare’s, from Coalville, were awarded a gold medal after becoming the North West Leicestershire A&L TAG winners. Runners-up Ashby Hill Top collected silver with semi-finalists Belvoirdale, from Coalville, and Measham landing bronze medals.

The medals are a new initiative from the Tigers community team. They have been launched to recognise youngsters’ effort, hard work and dedication to achieve success on the field or in the classroom in Tigers’ community programmes.

Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said: “The medals will now become an integral part of our daily community programmes and they will only be given out to those individuals or teams who really stand out from their peers.

“There will be gold, silver and bronze medals for each member of teams who make the final stages of our programmes at Welford Road. We also expect to use them on our rugby course programme for those who excel during each week.

“We hope the youngsters who receive them will be recognised for achieving the highest standards.”
