Leicester Tigers have completed the signing of Welsh centre Gareth Owen from the Scarlets.

A former age-group international and a Wales Sevens cap, the 28-year-old Owen has played at fly-half and full-back as well as at centre during his professional career.

Bridgend-born Owen played 50 times for the Ospreys before joining the Scarlets in 2012, where he made more than 70 appearances in five seasons which included the club’s Pro12 title win in 2016/17.

"Everyone knows about the size of the Leicester Tigers and the support for the club."

Tigers head coach Matt O’Connor said: “We have been looking at adding some experience to our backline options and Gareth has played a lot of rugby at a decent level with the Ospreys and Scarlets.

“He is a natural footballer in the midfield, he works well with the players around him and we think he can add to what we already have in the squad as we approach the new season.”

Owen will join his new club colleagues at Tigers at the start of pre-season training in July.

“Everyone knows about the size of the Leicester Tigers and the support for the club, and I am looking forward to getting started,” Owen said. “There is always competition for places at Tigers but I was very keen to come here when I heard about the opportunity.”
