Tigers fan Rachel wins double Invictus gold

Leicester Tigers fan and para-athlete Rachel Williamson has won two gold medals in the rowing events at this year’s Invictus Games in Sydney.

Rachel, from Rutland, won the Women's IR3 Four Minute Endurance and Women's IR3 One Minute Sprint indoor rowing events.

She served as a medic in the Royal Air Force for 10 years and was medically discharged in February this year after sustaining an injury, through playing RAF rugby. She has no function in her right arm as a result.

The Invictus Games is an international adaptive multi-sport event in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans take part in a variety of sporting disciplines.

First launched in London in 2014, the event has been hosted in the USA, Canada and this year at the Sydney Olympic Park in Australia.

Rachel added: "I served in the RAF for 10 and half years as a medic serving in the Falklands, but was medically discharged in Feb 18 due to a rugby injury gained representing the RAF Women’s Rugby Union Team.

Taking part of the Invictus Games has been an incredible journey. It has helped me find love in sport again and learn a new way of adapting to ensure I can take part.

"My aim is to get PB’s in all events. Winning two gold medals in the IR3 4 min endurance and IR3 1 min sprint, was a complete surprise that is still sinking in."

Talking about her support of Tigers, Rachel said: "I was a season ticket holder for about three or four years sitting around the stadium, including 1880 Club. I haven’t managed to see much this season due to Invictus Games training, but my parents regularly go and so I try to join them with a match ticket when I can."

Rachel will be in action in four more swimming events on October 24 including the finals of the Women's ISC 50m Freestyle, Women’s ISC 50m Backstroke, Women's ISC 50m Breaststroke and  Women's ISC 100m Freestyle events.

A huge congratulations from all the #Tigersfamily on Rachel’s achievements so far and good luck with the rest of your games.
