Tigers favourites back Olympic appeal

Leicester Tigers favourites Martin Corry and Martin Johnson have thrown their weight behind an appeal to help athletes competing in the 2009 Special Olympics.

The Leicester Mercury aims to raise £10,000 to buy tracksuits and training tops for the 200 sportsmen and women representing the East Midlands at next year's games, which are being held in Leicester.

Tigers captain and games ambassador Corry said: "I know the feeling of pride in pulling on your team's jersey and how that makes you feel a part of something bigger.

"The Special Olympics promises to be one of the great sporting events of next year. I am sure it will be a proud moment for all of those taking part."

Johnson, Tigers legend and England team manager, added: "All the participants will never forget taking part in the Special Olympics. To do so at such a high level is something very few people are able to achieve.

"The athletes are able to reach this standard not just through their talent – it is also down to hard work, their desire to compete and the enjoyment they get from doing so. This is a fantastic cause, so please support it."
