Leicester Tigers favourites Anthony Allen, Brett Deacon and Craig Newby returned to Welford Road this week to lead a series of Welford Road Masterclasses for more than 150 young players.

The trio passed on the benefit of more than 30 years of professional rugby experience to group of youngsters in a range of key skills.

Former Tigers centre Allen led the Masterclass session on attack and decision-making on the Welford Road pitch on Tuesday, with back-rower Deacon in charge of defence and breakdown skills the following day. All Blacks back-rower Newby led a girls-only Masterclass on Thursday.

Among the young players who enjoyed the sessions was Ashby’s Chester Owen, whose dad Wayne said: “He went to both days and really enjoyed it. Chester has been on a lot of the Tigers Rugby Camps and went to the kicking masterclass a couple of years ago too and always gets a lot out of them.

“From playing rugby in the area from under-7s upwards, he knows a lot of players in all different clubs and there was a good spirit in the group.”

Teenager Hannah West, a player at Market Harborough, attended the girls’ masterclass and her dad Paul said: “It’s a full day and it works well because the players have to focus and the coaches have to keep their concentration too. Hannah gets a lot out of the sessions and Craig Newby was really good as the lead coach.”

Although the Tigers Masterclasses have finished for this season, there is a full summer of Tigers Rugby Camps to come across the region this summer. For a calendar of Rugby Camps or to book your place, click here or phone the Tigers ticket office on 0116 319 8888 (option 2).
