Tigers kick off a summer of Rugby Courses at Ratcliffe College today.

Tigers coaches will be taking young players through their paces on the week-long course, which runs until Friday.

First-team stars Dan Hipkiss, who scored the try that sealed the Guinness Premiership title in May, and Ben Woods, who was on the mark for Tigers in the 2009 Heineken Cup Final, are set to drop in during the week.

They are due to take part in a question and answer session and to pass on tips to the young players taking part in the camp.

Matt Williams, Tigers senior rugby development officer, said: “It promises to be another fantastic summer of Rugby Courses.

“The young players who take part are always enthusiastic and keen to learn and have a great time while improving their game.

“There is a lot of demand on players’ time, particularly during the busy pre-season period, so it is great when they can drop in and pass on tips to the next generation of players.”

Tigers’ summer programme of Rugby Courses continues next week at Oakham School, where Matt Smith and Ben Pienaar are due to drop in, and at Swaffham RUFC, where Richard Blaze is scheduled to visit.
There are further camps in Leicestershire at Coalville and Lutterworth rugby clubs (both August 9-13) while Tigers will run a first ever course at Market Rasen and Louth RFC from August 16-20. There will also be camps at Stafford, Derby, Leamington, Swaffham, Burton, Sleaford and North Walsham rugby clubs and Stamford School.

The courses are supported by energy efficiency specialists Mark Group. They are aimed at players involved in contact rugby from under-nines through to under-16s. Everyone who attends will receive a free ticket to a first-team game at Welford Road, as well as a Tigers Rugby Course T-shirt, rugby ball and drinks bottle, plus a hot, healthy lunch each day and a personal assessment and feedback form.

Williams added: "Demand for the courses is high and several are already close to being sold out.”

Bill Rumble, Mark Group commercial director, said: "Rugby is a sport which can engage the whole family. By supporting the community programme, we are encouraging more and more children to get active and get excited about the game."
