Tigers welcomed Team RAC driver Stephen Jelley and his BMW 320si to Oval Park on Wednesday afternoon as the Leicestershire racer warmed up for the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship round at Donington Park on Sunday.

Club captain Martin Corry, Geordan Murphy and Ben Kay chatted with the lifelong Tigers fan ahead of their Guinness Premiership trip to Newcastle, also on Sunday.

“It was fantastic to meet Stephen and take a closer look at the car,” said Corry. “It was very interesting to hear about the
preparation and demands involved in being a racing driver.
Unfortunately we’re playing on Sunday so won’t be able see him in action this weekend, but we all wish him the best of luck.”

Jelley, who joined Colin Turkington at Team RAC for the 2008 British Touring Car Championship, hopes to get along to Welford Road next season, having previously been a spectator when growing up in Leicester.

“As a lifelong Leicester Tigers fan it was great to meet some of the players ahead of this Sunday,” said 25-year-old Jelley. “The skills that the players possess are so impressive, with great hand to eye coordination and physical strength. These are skills and attributes also needed to be a top racing driver, so it was great to see how these are applied in a different sport. It was an enjoyable day and I’ll be supporting Leicester in their race for the Premiership title.”
