Leicester Tigers Development XV maintained their winning start to the Premiership 'A' League season with a 34-0 victory over Sale Jets at Heywood Road on Monday evening.

Tigers held a 24-point lead at half-time thanks to two penalty tries awarded at close-range scrums and a score from wing George Catchpole, all converted by George Worth who also added a penalty.

In the second half, Sam Yawayawa added two more tries as Tigers made it three wins from three games.

Catchpole returned to action for the first time since the pre-season programme, while summer signing Pat Cilliers joined a matchday squad for the first time after recovering from a groin injury and got 20 minutes of gametime in the second half.

Former Tigers back-rower Laurence Pearce, who was among the unused replacements in the Aviva Premiership fixture between the clubs on Saturday, started at No8 for the Jets.

The opening points came after just 10 minutes when, after the Tigers forwards had been repelled just short of the tryline from a penalty in the left-hand corner, they got their rewards in the form of a first penalty try.

With the Jets being pushed back to their own tryline and the ball at the feet of Tigers No8 Luke Hamilton, the referee awarded a penalty try as Jets crumbled.

Fly-half Worth added the conversion from in front of the posts and stretched the lead into double figures just a minute later with a 30-metre penalty.

A second try came after 14 minutes as Oli Bryant put a clever diagonal kick in behind the Jets defence and Catchpole won the race to the ball and managed to gather and score. Worth added another precise kick from wide on the left to make it 17-0 to the visitors.

Harry Thacker produced a try-saving tackle at the other end as scrum-half Conor Dever darted through a gap, only for the Tigers skipper to chase him down in the corner.

Jets were reduced to 14 men on the half-hour when lock George Nott was sin-binned at a lineout and they lost another man just before half-time when prop James Flynn was yellow-cared defending his own line.

Punishment was instant as skipper Thacker opted for a scrum at the penalty and Tigers again pushed their rivals back before the referee again ran under the posts after signalling a penalty try. Worth’s kick brought the half to a close with Tigers 24 points in front.

Catchpole and Bryant made way for Charlie Thacker and Jordan Olowofela at half-time and Tigers were straight back on the attack with Yawayawa providing the bonus-point score on the right after an attacking scrum had provided the platform.

Michele Rizzo went off with an injury immediately after the try, with Riccardo Brugnara gaining his first run-out of the season for the club.

Jets received a third yellow card when hooker Curtis Langdon was sin-binned at another scrum and, although the hosts repelled the next push, Hamilton picked up and Roberts sent Yawayawa in to score his second.

Cilliers entered the action with 20 minutes remaining, with Sam Lewis joining the second row, though the young lock's evening ended early, leaving the field injured in the closing minutes as Tigers saw out the remainder of the game with 14 men.
