Tigers run in nine tries at Bedford

Leicester Tigers ran in nine tries for a second successive weekend as they gave the bulk of the senior squad a useful run-out in a 61-14 win at Bedford on Saturday.

Matt Smith and Ollie Dodge grabbed two each, with Tom Varndell, Richard Blaze, Will Hurrell, Vavae Tuilagi and Luke Abraham sharing the other scores in the second of the pre-season fixtures.

A sun-drenched crowd of 1,652 - just a few hundred down on Bedford's average league attendance at Goldington Road last season - saw the home side get off to a dream start with a try in the sixth minute for centre Brendan Burke after intercepting a Tigers pass on his own 10-metre line. Ben Patston added the conversion, but the Blues then had to wait more than an hour before registering another score.

Varndell grabbed Tigers' first try, after some crisp passing put the winger in possession to score in the left corner. Paul Burke added a conversion from close to the touchline.

Smith collected his first score after Jordan Crane had taken the ball into the heart of the defence and the backline put the right-winger into space. Burke was again successful with the kick to make it 14-7 to the visitors.

Ten minutes later Smith scored again after Matt Cornwell and Varndell got Tigers moving forward and the ball was spun quickly down the line for the wing to dive over the line.

Second row Blaze joined the scorers in the 37th minute, taking the ball over after a close-range line-out. Burke's conversion made the score 26-7 at half-time.

With coaches Richard Cockerill and Mike Rayer sharing the game-time around their squads, two new line-ups took to the field for the second half and the period was only five minutes old when Hurrell extended Leicester's lead. Owen Finegan made space on halfway and the young winger supplied the finish on the left. Andy Goode made no mistake with a thumping conversion.

Then Dodge, playing at outside centre, won the race to a little kick over the defence from Goode to touch down under the posts. And Dodge repeated the dose just two minutes later, this time fashioning a score for himself by taking the ball close to halfway and finding a gap before using strength and pace to stay away from the cover. Goode converted both tries to stretch the lead to 47-7.

The home crowd had something to cheer when the Blues, who included Tigers youngsters Dan Cole, Greg Sammons and Chris Mundy in their squad, collected their second score of the day in the 70th minute. A quick penalty took them close to the Tigers line and Matt Allen cut inside to score. John Eldrick kicked the extras.

Tigers rounded-off the afternoon's work-out with two tries in two minutes near the end. Tuilagi touched down from Goode's grubber kick and then Luke Abraham started and finished the move which brought the proceedings to an end, passing out a long ball near halfway then taking the return from Hurrell to score in the corner. Goode added two more conversions to make the final score 61-14 to Tigers.
