Try bonus vital says Geordan

Geordan Murphy scored his 19th Heineken Cup try in Leicester's win over Edinburgh on Saturday but was more pleased with seeing the team add a further three touchdowns to claim the bonus point.

The Irish international full-back has made a habit of reaching European milestones this season, collecting his Elite Award for 50 Heineken Cup appearances following the match against Leinster in Dublin and then drawing level with Leon Lloyd as the club’s top European try-scorer against Edinburgh.

“It was good to get three tries in the first half but last season away to Bourgoin we did the same and then we didn’t manage to get the bonus point,” Murphy said.

“It was important that we kept scoring and it was obviously good for us to take the bonus point out of the game.

“You have to win the game first, that is the way it works, then you go for the bonus point. You can’t start a game thinking you are going to score four tries.

“The forwards played tremendously well and gave us the platform we needed. It was a good game and a much-improved performance from last week. We have still got areas to improve on.”

Only 10 men have scored more tries in the history of the Heineken Cup but, as for drawing level with Lloyd in the table, Murphy said: “It really does not bother me, records are made to be broken. But I’ll give Leon a ring and remind him!”
