Urban Rugby Squad paying dividends with local clubs

The Urban Rugby initiative run by the Premiership Rugby clubs is bearing fruit, with players enjoying the game so much they are joining their local clubs.

Local teenagers Namrata Vyas and Amna Suleman took part in last year’s sessions at Fullhurst Community College and were selected to train in the Leicester Tigers Urban Rugby summer sessions. They did so well that they represented the club on the way to the last four in the national finals and are now playing club rugby at Leicester Forest RFC.

Urban Rugby Squad is a Premiership Rugby initiative which gives young people aged 14-16 an opportunity to participate in sporting activity and personal development using rugby as inspiration. Delivered at the Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs, young people learn to play touch rugby, reinforcing the qualities of teamwork and commitment, before competing in a national finals where the Urban Rugby Champions are crowned.

“We would never have thought about playing if it wasn’t for the Urban Rugby sessions, but we are absolutely loving rugby,” said Namrata.

Amna thanked the club for their support and said: “We’re really enjoying ourselves. Namrata is a flanker, I’m a winger and our coach said we are naturals.

“We want to wish all the participants from last year’s squad continued success and send a good-luck message to the new crop.”

Following the success of last year, the Leicester Tigers Urban Rugby Squad is back up and running with sessions at Fullhurst Community College, William Bradford Academy, The Lancaster School and Beaumont Leys School ahead of a summer camp where the most determined and hardworking players will be selected to represent the Tigers.
