The 22-year-old winger scored his 49th and 50th tries in club colours as Tigers returned from Leeds Carnegie with only their second win in five visits.
“Week-in-week-out, the forwards do the hard graft and set the platform for us to attack,” said Varndell, whose 50 tries have come in only 61 starts and 13 appearances from the bench. “They came through and set that platform for us and we were lucky enough to get the tries we did.”
“I’ve just found out that the second try was my 50th. I’m so, so chuffed. Getting 50 tries for such a great club, and a club I’m very proud to be at is great, but I’ve still got a long way to go to catch up with Lloydy, Austin and Geordie etc. 50 is a good landmark and there’s hopefully more to come.”
Tigers started relatively slowly but eventually scored three tries to run out 29-6 winners against Stuart Lancaster’s newly-promoted side.
“The boys dug in. We had a bit of a rough start and gave away a few more penalties than we would have wanted to. We made it a bit hard for ourselves but in the end we got the tries and, although we missed out on the bonus point, we’re happy with the win. Leeds away is a tough fixture for us and we did a job and got the win.
“It was a bit of a heavy pitch on the night. Normally, Headingley’s a nice pitch to run on and quite a fast surface but it was quite heavy and quite tiring on the legs. We did the job, got the points we needed and I think everyone’s pretty happy with that.”
