Varsity revisited | Last time out

It is 18 months since the last Varsity encounters, with Cambridge scoring a double in the 2019 encounters.

The 'Battle of the Blues' was fought out at Twickenham, its home for the last 100 years, in December 2019 before last season’s event was cancelled during the Covid lockdown.

Coreen Grant was the match-winner for Cambridge Women as she danced her way to a later try which secured an 8-5 victory for the Light Blues. Now a Scotland international the centre had been on the beaten side earlier in the year with her former university, Durham, and did not want to repeat the experience.

Fergus Jemphrey was the two-try hero for Cambridge in the men's match as they secured a Light Blue double for only the fourth time (2002, ’09, ’17 and ’19).

Jemphrey's double helped Cambridge to hang on to The Rhino Trophy in a game which ended in a convincing 15-0 victory for the reigning champions on a rain-lashed afternoon.

Now the Varsity Matches move to Mattioli Woods Welford Road, home of Leicester Tigers, with kick-off in the women’s game at 1.00pm on Sunday and the men at 3.00pm. Match tickets are still available. Book online or phone 0116 319 8888 (option 2).
