We got what we wanted says Cockerill

Six tries in the home win over Newcastle Falcons secured back-to-back home wins and lifted Leicester Tigers into third place in the Aviva Premiership table.

Tigers led by just one point at half-time but piled on the pressure after the restart, claiming five tries in less than half an hour of the second period.

“Our discipline was really poor in the first half and they didn’t have to do too much for their 12 points,” said director of rugby Richard Cockerill.

“But the boys had a word with themselves at half-time and we got a barnstorming start to the second half with an early try. After that we blew them away.”

With 10 senior players away on international duties, and Geoff Parling and Ben Pienaar added to the injury list during the last week, Cockerill was particularly pleased to complete back-to-back home wins which kept Tigers in touch with the top part of the table.

“Six tries and a bonus point with all the issues we’ve got is great,” he said.

“The set-piece was a good foundation for us. The forwards did really well driving up and the ball-carrying was really good, Thomas Waldrom did that well, Jordan Crane was outstanding.

“Our attitude to play and go for it was very good. We had two young props on at the end and some young boys in the backline and that is all good experience for them. It shows the club is in fine health.

“In the last two weeks we’ve got the points we wanted and these two games will be vital for the mix up at the end of the season.

“Hopefully now we can get all of our Test boys back and go to London Irish next Saturday in good shape.”

International lock Louis Deacon came through his first match since last season’s Premiership Final and Cockerill confirmed that fly-half Jeremy Staunton had also returned to fitness following an Achilles problem.
