Welford Road Revisited: David Matthews

Today marks the birthday of one of Leicester Tigers greatest ever players - 'the legends legend' - David Matthews.

An Oakham-lad, Matthews went onto make 502 appearances in a Tigers shirt - no player has played for the club more times. A powerful back row, he captained the club between 1965-68 and played his 500th game against Northampton on 23 February 1974.

He went onto coach Leicester from 1988-91  before becoming a non-executive director from 1997-2007 and the club president between 2001-03.

2005 saw Matthews awarded life membership and in the words of club chairman Peter Tom:

"He gave his all, as a player and a coach, and he remains a highly influential figure at the club, epitomising all that is so special about the Tigers."

LTTV caught up with David ahead of the 125 Year Dinner held at Welford Road earlier this year joined by club legends Ian 'Dosser' Smith, Peter Wheeler and Garry Adey.
