Welford Road to host Saxons

Figure image
International rugby is to return to Welford Road on Friday, February 1 when the home of Leicester Tigers hosts an England Saxons international against Ireland A (kick-off 7.45pm).

The Saxons squad is the last step before senior international rugby and the fixture presents a perfect opportunity for fans to experience an international occasion on a club ground.

The England Saxons squad which played in the Barclays Churchill Cup last summer featured Tigers players Jordan Crane and Tom Croft as well as new signings Ayoola Erinle and Richard Blaze, while the Irish contingent at Welford Road will also be chasing a call-up as Frank Murphy, Johne Murphy and Ian Humphreys all appeared at this level last season.

Conor O'Shea, National Academy Director, said: "Given the importance we place on England Saxons being just one step below full international Test honours, playing this home match in front of passionate and knowledgeable supporters who we know will turn out in their thousands to support this England team, will give this England Saxons game an added dimension".

Tickets for this historic game - the first England international at this level to be held at Welford Road for 10 years - will go on sale on Tuesday, September 25.

Leicester Tigers have been awarded the game by the Rugby Football Union and have been able to negotiate discount prices on tickets for club season ticket holders and members. To take advantage of this offer, tickets must be purchased before December 10.

Prices will start from just £10 standing and £12 seating for adult season ticket holders, and £15/£18 for members.

As an added bonus, season ticket holders are able to buy as many additional tickets as they want before the deadline day at the members' prices so you can make it an occasion for the whole family or a group of friends. Members can purchase additional tickets at the agreed members' prices.

As this is an RFU fixture, seats in the stadium are unreserved and will be sold on a first come, first served basis so season ticket holders are advised to book early if they want to secure their usual spaces.

England Saxons - or England A as they were then - last made an appearance at Welford Road back in February 1998, when they lost 41-22 to Wales A. The England team that evening featured nine players who subsequently won senior international honours, including Saracens hooker George Chuter, now a Tigers favourite and with England at the Rugby World Cup.

Contact the Tigers ticket office to buy now, phone 08701 28 34 30, go online at www.leicestertigers.com or visit the ticket office at Welford Road. Tickets bought online will be charged at the full price.
