Wells in perfect place to learn

Harry Wells says he is learning a lot from the coaches and senior players at Leicester Tigers after enjoying a breakthrough season at Welford Road.

Tigers academy graduate Wells, a member of the World Junior Championship-winning squad with England Under-20s in 2013, made his Tigers debut four years ago but has enjoyed a big campaign in 2016/17.

“I’m happy to be playing a lot more rugby than I have previously,” he said after agreeing terms on a new contract at Welford Road beyond the end of this season.

“I’m working really hard with all the coaches and the older players, trying to develop my game. It’s a competitive group, there are guys who’ve played a lot of rugby and they are helpful and really approachable – guys like Ed Slater, Mike Fitzgerald and Graham Kitchener. They all know a lot about the game and have been a big help.”

Wells started every game in the successful Anglo-Welsh Cup campaign and used his form there as a springboard for a first Aviva Premiership start in the win over Harlequins at The Stoop in February.

“It’s nice to get some recognition and to get gametime,” he said. “I used those Cup games to show what I could do and playing well there gave the opportunity to then play in the Premiership. That helped with gaining a bit of trust from the coaches and that’s important too.

“Now I just want to keep working and try to make those selection decisions tough for the coaches.”
