Win provides platform to build on, says Malouf

Leicester Tigers wing Nick Malouf hopes that his first try for the club and a first win of the season on Saturday can provide a boost for another tough run of games.

Malouf, who has started all three games so far, earned a nomination for the Citizen Try of the Week in the Aviva Premiership with his score against Gloucester and is now preparing for matches away to Harlequins and then at home to defending league champions Exeter Chiefs.

“I think we’ve always been confident because we know what we are capable of,” said the wing who traded a place in the Australia Sevens set-up for a place in the Tigers squad this summer.

“It is massive for us to get the win. With those first games we’ve been disappointed with the performance because we know we are so much better than that. We will use the win to get confidence and take that into the next couple of rounds and into Europe.

“The disparity between what has happened on the pitch and what we think we are capable of has been frustrating, so it was good to put parts of it together out there.

“Just getting the win on the board is a great way to start and we hope we can go from there.”

Malouf got on the end of a quick backs move, taking a pass from Telusa Veainu and beating the covering defence to score in the right-hand corner for his first try in professional club rugby.

“It was great to get my hands on the ball,” he said. “I’ve not had that many opportunities to do that in the other two games. I got a bit of space and just put my head down and got to the line.

“Fordy told me afterwards that he was just on the inside unmarked and I didn’t see him. I put my head down and just tried to get across the line.”
