Scrum-half Ben Youngs says a good team performance in the win over Ireland was just what the England squad needed in their final warm-up fixture before the Rugby World Cup.England kick off the World Cup on home soil with a match against Fiji at Twickenham on Friday, September 18 and go into that game on the back of a 21-13 win over Six Nations champions Ireland.
“Ireland are a quality team, number two in the world,” said Leicester Tigers and England scrum-half Youngs.
“We felt we left a couple of scores out there too, we had opportunities to score more.
“But an arm wrestle in pre-World Cup game is a good thing for us, it shows we can put teams under pressure and we needed to close out the game too."
Youngs, who won his 49th cap on Saturday, told the England Rugby podcast: “For us, the World Cup started today we wanted a performance that would give the boys a good lift going into Fiji next week. Don’t get me wrong, there are still areas we need to sharpen up and we can look at it again on Monday.
“We were disappointing against France but it highlighted a lot of things we needed to address and I think we are in a good place. It’s another game making decisions under pressure and another game fitter at this stage. The most important things is that it was a real collective performance.
“A win gives you momentum and the guys will be in a good place when we meet up again on Monday night. In two weeks it is showtime and we need to perform.”
