A young Tigers side kicked off their Sevens campaign with a run to the final of the 125th anniversary Melrose Sevens in the Scottish borders on Saturday.

While their senior colleagues were at Twickenham in the EDF Energy Cup Final, the Tigers Sevens squad beat Kelso (40-5), Jedforest (38-12) and Melrose (31-7) with some enterprising performances and with the tries being shared around a team which featured England Sevens internationals Tom and Ben Youngs.

Scrum-half Ben Youngs scored twice in the opening match, Matt Smith grabbed a hat-trick against Jedforest, and then the pair shared four of the five scores in the victory over the hosts.

The final ended in a 33-12 defeat by Scottish Thistles, the national sevens development squad who gained experience at the Hong Kong and Adelaide legs of the IRB Sevens circuit recently.

Tigers will send a squad to four more Sevens tournaments this summer, with the North Walsham event next up on Sunday, May 4.
