Tigers Academy make it two from two

The Tigers Academy have recorded a second straight win to make it two from two to start the 2018/19 U18 League season with a 41-point, 12-53 win over Northampton Saints Academy at Bedford.

The Cubs ran in eight tries to one on Saturday afternoon over their local rivals, with the first in the 6th minute to captain Sam Eveleigh converted by fly-half Sam Costelow followed by converted tries in a two minute period to James Whitcombe in the 33rd and Leo Gilliland in the 35th seeing them take a 12-point, 7-19 lead in to the half time break.

Saints only points in the opening half came in the 22nd minute.

It was more than 10 minutes before Tigers crossed for their first score in the second half when winger Luke Phoenix went over in the 47th minute and doubled their second half tally just two minutes later when Archie Vanes scored and Costelow converted to extend the lead to 19 points with just over 20 minutes remaining in the match.

The hosts scored their second and final try in the 50th minute, but missed the conversion attempt to close the deficit to 21 points.

Sam Costelow extended the lead by three points with a penalty goal in the 54th minute before three three in the final ten minutes to Joe Browning in 60th, fullback Freddie Steward in the 65th and Ronnie Du Rant in the final play of the game to close out the match and complete the 41 point win.

Sam Costelow will make his first start of the new U18 Academy League season after the Wales U18s representative was named at fly-half in one of three changes to the starting side made ahead of Saturday's derby fixture against Northampton Saints Academy in Round 2 of the 2018/19 competition.

Archie Vanes will start at hooker in a straight swap with Shaun Allsopp, while Emeka Ilione has been named at No.8 after coming off the bench in last weekend's 52-point, 14-66 victory over Newcastle at Kingston Park.

Joe Browning, who scored a hat-trick in the season opener against the Falcons Academy, will line up on the left wing in a back three that includes Leo Gilliland and Freddie Steward.

Harry Glynn, who scored 15 points in the season-opener, has been shifted from fly-half to inside centre with Costelow to join Jack Van Poortvliet as the half-backs.

Tom Manz and George Martin will once again make up the second row, while international U18s representatives Alex Maxwell (Scotland) and James Whitcombe (England) join Vanes in the front-row.
