Leicester Tigers sign Gabriel Oghre

Leicester Tigers have signed Gabriel Oghre on a short-term deal.

The 24-year-old hooker joins Tigers after five years with Wasps.

Oghre played his junior rugby for Bath Rugby, where he captained the club’s Academy side, before joining Wasps ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

He made his senior debut during his first season with Wasps, in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, and captained the club’s Premiership Shield squad.

The following year, Oghre made his league debut and was a member of the England Under-20s squad.

In the summer of 2019, he joined the Wasps senior squad and came on as a replacement in the 2020 Gallagher Premiership Final against Exeter Chiefs.

During the 2021/22 season, Oghre was included in the England senior men’s training squad ahead of the 2021 Autumn Tests.

Speaking about Oghre, Leicester Tigers Head Coach Steve Borthwick said: “Gabriel is an incredibly talented player who is a great addition to our squad and club.”

“He is a mobile forward and excellent ball carrier, with a great ability to link with others in attack.

“At only 24, he has a strong level of experience in the Premiership and adds healthy competition to our front-row ranks.”

Discussing his move to Leicester Tigers, Oghre said: “It’s an amazing club with a huge history and amazing opportunity, which I am so excited about.”

“Tigers is a place where I know I can improve as a player and I am looking forward to adding what I can to the squad, while learning from the players and coaches in Leicester.

“I am looking forward to being back in a rugby environment and enjoying it.

“You never forget playing at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, as an away player, because of the atmosphere and environment that the stadium has and the supporters create.

“There are not many places like it and so the chance to be able to play there for Leicester is something special.”

Oghre joins the Leicester Tigers squad effective immediately.
