An Evening with Cockers and Mage

Richard Cockerill and Aaron Mauger took fans behind the scenes in the opening Supporters Event of the season at Welford Road on Wednesday evening.

In ‘An Evening With Cockers And Mage’ in Final Whistle, the director of rugby and head coach talked in depth about the volume of work that goes into getting a team on to the pitch in the professional game.

With sections focusing on pre-season preparation, the club’s Oval Park training base, the constant process of player retention and recruitment, the season so far and prospects for the rest of the campaign, more than 100 fans joined Cockers and Mage in an informal evening to hear about how the club prepares a team to play.

“All the players work very, very hard in the week,” said Cockerill. “There is a lot to fit in and a lot of work is tailored to individual needs because there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ when you’re dealing with modern players.

“Mental freshness is important too because there is a lot of work to get through and if you are mentally fresh then your body will follow.”

Head coach Mauger talked about contrasts and similarities in the approach from the northern and southern hemispheres, about developing and evolving a style of play, and how the individual details come together for gameday.

“Everything an individual does is for the good of the team,” he said. “You have to believe in your systems and also in yourself as a player.”

Thank you to club partners Everards who donated a free pint of Tiger to guests and to everyone who joined us for an enjoyable and entertaining evening.

There are more supporter events coming up in the season, including the unique Beers With The Boys on Tuesday, January 17 in the company of Ben Youngs, Tom Youngs, Matt Smith and Harry Thacker, together with their dads Nick, Ian and Troy. Click here for more details.
