Leicester Tigers are second in Anglo-Welsh Cup Pool 4 after opening their campaign with victory over Bath Rugby on Friday evening.

Tigers scored two tries through Luke Hamilton and George Catchpole on their way to claiming four match points from a 21-20 win at The Rec.

With each team in Pool 4 playing each team in Pool 1, Gloucester Rugby lead Tigers’ group by a point after beating Saracens 36-32 at Kingsholm. Gloucester overturned a 20-point deficit at the break, with Dan Thomas, Henry Purdy and David Halaifonua scoring early in the second-half before Halaifonua’s last-minute score clinched victory for the Cherry and Whites.

Newcastle Falcons are third in the group after they lost 24-16 at home to Northampton Saints. Tom Collins and Rory Hutchinson scored tries either side of half-time with Sam Olver adding 14 points with the boot. Alex Tait crossed for the hosts with ten minutes to go after Mike Delany had kept them in touch with three penalties.

The result puts Northampton top of Pool 1 ahead of Saracens, Bath and Newport Gwent Dragons, who get their campaign going against Tigers at Welford Road on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Scarlets are the final team in Pool 4 and, after being in Guinness Pro 12 action over the weekend, they enter the competition on Friday evening when they host Bath. Gloucester are at Franklin’s Gardens to take on Northampton while Newcastle travel to Saracens.

Worcester Warriors top Pool 2 after recording a 31-25 victory against Bristol Rugby, who occupy bottom place in Pool 3. Worcester came back from 13-10 down at half-time at Sixways, scoring five tries on their way to a bonus-point win.ile Harlequins top Pool 3 thanks to their 29-15 victory over Exeter Chiefs at the Twickenham Stoop.
