Aviva Premiership will be toughest yet, says Cockers

Richard Cockerill says the Aviva Premiership will be stronger than ever this season.

Cockerill joined his fellow directors of rugby and the captains of the 12 Aviva Premiership clubs for the season launch at Twickenham on Thursday.

Tigers complete their pre-season campaign at home to Ospreys tonight (Friday) before they kick-off the whole season against Gloucester Rugby in front of the BT Sport cameras at Kingsholm next Friday (7.45pm).

And Cockerill says the squad recruitment across the league, plus the promotion of Bristol Rugby from the Championship, will make this season’s competition the toughest yet.

“It will be interesting because every side has got that bit stronger,” said Cockerill. “Bristol have come up and are a bit of a sleeping giant, and teams right across the competition have recruited well, so it will be interesting when it all starts.

“The competition is getting stronger every year, which is good for the Premiership.

“Everyone is going to want to get a good start and those first four games are going to be key for everybody.”
