Ben Youngs sustained a knee injury in England's opening game of their Natwest 6 Nations campaign, the RFU have this evening (Monday) confirmed.
The Leicester Tigers scrum-half underwent a scan this afternoon which showed he had ruptured his MCL in his left knee. He is having further assessment with a surgeon this week.
Youngs is likely to be out for four months, the RFU said.
He was injured in the early stages of England's bonus-point win in Rome. He has been replaced in the squad by Richard Wigglesworth of Saracens as the squad reported back on Monday afternoon.
