Bhangra dancers Gabhru Panjab De, who have performed for Leicester Tigers over the last two seasons, have landed prestigious awards at a world-renowned cultural festival.

Gabhru Panjab De were hugely popular with supporters after performing at Tigers’ Champions Cup quarter-final and semi-final fixtures last season and at the final home game of the 2014/15 campaign against Northampton Saints.

Now their talents have been recognised with two awards at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

The group were winners of Choreographed/Stylized Folk Dance Group and Children’s Folk Dance Group awards.

Chris Rose, Tigers head of brand, said: “Congratulations to our friends Gabhru Panjab De on their hugely deserved awards.

“We’ve been delighted to have Gabhru Panjab De support a number of Tigers matches. They have received a fantastic reaction from our supporters, particularly at last season’s Champions Cup semi-final and we look forward to welcoming them back to Welford Road again this season.

Aki Sandhu, Gabhru Panjab De manager/choreographer, said: “We were overwhelmed when we won. We were up against some amazing talent but the teams done us proud having worked so hard.”

Established in the 1940s, the Eisteddfod sees around 4,000 performers and 50,000 visitors converge on the Welsh town of Llangollen to sing and dance in a combination of competition, performance, and international peace and friendship.

Bindi Sandhu, Gabhru Panjab De founder, said: “This is a proud moment for not just for Gabhru Panjab De, but for the global bhangra dance industry. Gabhru Panjab De have been leading the way for Bhangra dance since 1988 and still continues to grow from strength to strength.”
