The Ultimate Big Boot back in 2019

Loughborough RFC and Oakham RFC were the first teams to take on the Ultimate Big Boot challenge in 2019 during Tigers’ Gallagher Premiership victory over Gloucester.

The teams took to the Welford Road pitch at half-time to put their catching skills to the test in front of more than 20,000 supporters.

The Ultimate Big Boot, sponsored by De Montfort University, invites groups of friends from schools, clubs, and communities to try and catch as many balls out of 10 attempts.

It was a low scoring affair, which saw Loughborough make two catches while Oakham claimed the win with four catches.

Tigers matchday team were also on hand to help kick a few balls when the Big Boot machine played up, finding their inner Dusty Hare to punt the ball high into the air.

Youngster Toby Salisbury from Loughborough RFC made one catch for his team and said: “It was good out there on the pitch and a little scary, but I managed to hold my nerve and ended up catching one of the balls.

“I saw the ball coming down towards me and I just thought ‘Oh no, I’m going to have to catch this’ – it didn’t help that it was freezing out there, but I can now say that I have played at Welford Road!”

George Emerson, Ben Morton and Alfie Pearce made successful catches for Oakham RFC and said: “There’s not much time to think about it when you’re out there, as you’re focussed on trying to catch the ball. But it was great fun out there and such a good game to play.

“The ball goes much higher than you think and we managed to catch four so not the greatest, but we’ll definitely want to come back and beat our school.”
