The meeting of English champions Leicester Tigers and world champions South Africa has captured the imagination of the public with more than 3,500 tickets snapped up in the first 24 hours of sales.

Tigers welcome the Springboks to Welford Road on Friday, November 6 in a match organised to officially open the new 10,000-seat Caterpillar Stand.

Tickets went on sale from the Tigers ticket office on Wednesday and staff handled enquiries from all over the UK and from South African supporters from further afield.

Prices are from £24 for adult seating, £15 young adults (16-21), £10 juniors. Special rates apply for Tigers season ticket holders and members.

Tigers chairman Peter Tom CBE says: “We are all looking forward to the visit of South Africa and another magnificent occasion at Welford Road. We’re delighted by the level of interest the visit of South Africa has already attracted.”

South Africa claimed the Rugby World Cup in 2007 with victory over defending champions England and beat the touring British & Irish Lions this summer before kicking-off their Tri-Nations programme with wins in each of their opening three games against New Zealand Australia.

In the autumn, they travel to Europe for Tests against Ireland, France and Italy, while building for the defence of their world title.

Tigers won a record eighth English title with victory over London Irish in the Guinness Premiership Final at Twickenham in May and also reached a fifth Heineken Cup Final last season.

The defence of the Guinness Premiership crown begins at Sale Sharks on September 4, with Tigers hosting the first home game of the season at their new-look stadium against Newcastle Falcons on Saturday, September 19. Tickets for that fixture are also on sale now.

With more than 60 per cent of Welford Road already sold out for the whole season, supporters are advised to book early to guarantee the best available seats for the biggest games. Tickets are on general sale now for all league and cup fixtures.
