Richard Cockerill praised the character of the Leicester Tigers team after a 17-8 Aviva Premiership win over Bath on Sunday.Tom Youngs scored his first try of the season as Tigers led 11-3 at half-time and Owen Williams kicked the rest of the points, with Bath grabbing a last-minute score from hooker Ross Batty.
“We talked about needing an 80-minute performance,” Tigers director of rugby Cockerill.
“Bath are a good team and the win says a lot for the character of the players today. We’ve had a tough, physical few weeks with Toulon back to back, Northampton, Sale and Bath.
“The forward pack were manful, Fraser Balmain was outstanding at tighthead, and across the board the effort was great.
“From the kick-off, our intent to play was really good and we got reward for that. I thought we defended exceptionally well, their backline didn't get the opportunities they normally get. Physically we were very good too.”
The win puts Tigers level on points with fourth-placed side Wasps with 10 rounds of Aviva Premiership competition remaining, while Bath remain second in the table.
“We are still in the mix and we have an appetite for the fight,” added Cockerill.
“It is a very good result in isolation but nothing is decided in January. It is just one game, we've still got work to do and we’ll need a similar performance at Harlequins next week.”
