Cockerill: Whole club deserved that win

Leicester Tigers got back to winning ways on Friday with Richard Cockerill describing the performance and result as "a far better reflection of what we are about".

Blaine Scully scored the only try and Owen Williams kicked the rest of the points as Tigers beat Harlequins 22-16 to secure a third Aviva Premiership victory of the season in front of a 21,510 crowd at Welford Road.

“I’m happy for the club, the supporters, the staff that work so hard, the coaches and for the players because they are the ones out there doing it,” said director of ruby Cockerill.

“We have had a lot of criticism, some things that attacked the fabric of the club, and that is disappointing and unwarranted.

“But I’m pleased for everybody after the win. We stuck tight and stuck to our mettle, everybody kept their head down, worked hard and showed that bit of character.

“The attitude from the players was that whatever was needed, they were going to give. The attitude right from the start of the game was great, with the crowd too. The performance and the result were a better reflection of what we are about.”

Tigers were never headed after Scully’s first-half try as Williams landed a conversion and five penalties.

Cockerill added: “The win was important and we controlled the game pretty well in some difficult conditions, especially in the second half. Quins are a good attacking team and they did not have many opportunities.

“The attitude of the club this whole week has been great. More than 21,000 people are going home happy tonight.

“It’s not all fixed from one game and we won’t get carried away. There’s still a long way to go and a lot to do, but it is better to do that off the back of a win.”
