County scouts up for Tigers showdown

More than 2,000 Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Explorer Scouts will join defending Guinness Premiership champions Leicester Tigers on Saturday for their home game with London Wasps.

Scout groups from across Leicestershire have taken advantage of Tigers' new Group Bookings Scheme to be at Welford Road for the clash between English rugby's two most successful clubs.

The Scouts, who are aged between six and 18, will be encouraging children and adults to get involved and will have a series of activities around the ground.

Jez Chapman, county activity organiser, said: "They will be wearing their neckerchiefs outside their warm clothing - it should be quite a sight to see about 2,000 woggles and 2,000 neckers at the game!

"We do a lot of different activities and this is just one of the great things that they can get involved in."

The activities include two bands and entertainers as well as the national scout exhibition trailer located outside the new Caterpillar Stand.

Jez Chapman added: "The trailer is part of our national set-up to help promote scouting. On the back of that we have a five-metre bouldering wall, which people can have a go on.

"In the trailer are details of the kind of things you can get involved in and how you can join.

"Scouting is very popular and we have so many children who want to be part of scouting. That's the Bear Grylls effect, he is our Chief Scout.

"As a result, we want to attract more adults. They don't have to be leaders, they can be helpers, fundraisers, treasurers - people who help run a group."

David Clayton, Tigers managing director, said: "The Scout movement does a tremendous amount of work with young people all over the country and we are delighted to have so many from our region with us this weekend.

"We hope that they enjoy their day and we would love to see them as regular visitors to Leicester Tigers."

Kick-off for Tigers against London Wasps is at 3.15pm on Saturday.
