The Leicester Tigers Development XV began their build-up to the Guinness A League programme with a 33-14 victory over Cambridge University at Grange Road on Monday evening.

Gavin Hickie and Ian Humphreys made their return from injury with a 40-minute run-out each as Tigers ran in five tries.

Winger Nathaniel Lowers scored from a good backs move to open the scoring, with Mitch Culpin adding the second try on the opposite wing before their more experienced colleagues got on the scoresheet. Hickie made a try-scoring return, while scrum-half Christophe Laussucq and centre Ayoola Erinle also grabbed a touchdown.

Matt Cornwell led the side which featured a mix of experienced players and youth from the Tigers Academy.

"The seniors and the younger guys integrated well," said Tigers player development manager Carl Douglas. "It was a very positive performance and a great experience for the younger lads.

"It was a good start for the squad ahead of the Guinness A League and we're looking forward to that first league game next week, hopefully in front of a big Welford Road crowd."

The Development XV's opening game in the Guinness A League is against Leeds Carnegie at Welford Road next Monday, October 29.
