East Midlands Airport have joined forces with defending Premiership rugby champions Leicester Tigers as sponsors of the club's new media communications.

Premiership champions in each of the last two seasons, Leicester Tigers are the best-supported club in UK rugby, with 13,000 season ticket holders and a supporter-base spread across the Midlands and beyond.

In their role as New Media sponsor, East Midlands Airport will provide support for Tigers’ official Facebook and Twitter communications, as well as the club’s official iPhone app which has had more than 14,000 downloads since launch.

Leicester Tigers managing director David Clayton said: “Communication in all areas is vitally important, especially as we have supporters across a wide geographic area.

“Social networking, such as Facebook and Twitter, is growing rapidly and provides another area to help us get important information to our supporters, whether they are regular visitors to Welford Road or follow the club’s fortunes from a greater distance.

“We’re delighted that East Midlands Airport has come on board as a sponsor. The airport is obviously a big regional brand and a business which is developing and growing too. We look forward to a successful and long-running partnership.”

The deal was officially announced on Saturday at Tigers’ 48-6 victory over Leeds Carnegie in the Aviva Premiership Rugby at Welford Road.

Penny Coates, chief operating officer for Manchester Airports Group, said: “We look forward to continuing our affiliation with Leicester Tigers in the capacity of New Media Sponsor. As well as our existing advertising presence around the pitch and in the club’s matchday programme, we are delighted to be working with the club to further promote East Midlands Airport and alert our customers instantaneously of great deals and news from their local airport.”
