Six Tigers included in England training squad

Six members of the Leicester Tigers squad have been selected to take part in an England Rugby training camp in preparation for this summer’s Test matches.

Ellis Genge and George Martin, who are both capped at Test level, are joined by their Leicester team-mates Joe Heyes, Dan Kelly, Freddie Steward and Harry Wells.

Heyes has previously been involved at national level as part of the wider-squad, while Steward and Wells have represented England at age-grade levels.

Manchester-born Kelly, who joined Tigers in the summer of 2020 from National League 1 side Loughborough University, represented Ireland at Under-20s level.

Four of the six players included by England head coach Eddie Jones - Martin, Heyes, Steward and Wells - are graduates of the Leicester Tigers Academy.

Speaking about the inclusion of the sextet, Leicester Tigers head coach Steve Borthwick said: "It is a great recognition of the hard work each of these players have put in throughout this season."

"We are all very proud of them to have been included in this training group with the national side.

"It is a fantastic opportunity for them as players and will add to their experience, which they will bring back to the club and improve our environment."

The six Tigers are part of a 34-player squad announced today for a five-day training camp next week.

With 12 English players involved in the British and Irish Lions squad and the Gallagher Premiership semi-finalists (Bristol Bears, Exeter Chiefs, Harlequins and Sale Sharks) unavailable for selection, there are 21 uncapped players involved.

An updated squad will reconvene on Sunday, June 20 ahead of the England A fixture against Scotland A at Mattioli Woods Welford Road the following week when Gallagher Premiership finalists will not be available for selection.

Following the final, Jones will further update his squad for England’s two Test matches at Twickenham Stadium against USA (Sunday, July 4, 2.00pm) and Canada (Saturday, July 10, 3.00pm).

Jones said: “For this group it’s a chance to come into the England environment and really show what they can do.  We expect them to be enthusiastic, full of energy and we want them to know there is no limit to their horizon.

“We’re really looking forward to working with this group of young players and see where we can take them.  They have the opportunity to take on the world.”
