Tournament organisers EPCR have announced today that remaining fixtures in the pool stages of the Heineken Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup are set to go ahead this month.
The statement says: “EPCR is pleased to clarify that pool stage matches in Rounds 3 and 4 of the Heineken Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup are set to go ahead as scheduled.
“Following dialogue with the participating leagues and unions, we have been informed that exemptions for the ‘pursuit of an economic activity’ put in place by the French government will apply to clubs and match officials who are travelling between France and the UK.
“Further information will also be sought from the French authorities regarding possible new conditions which may be applicable to travel between France and the UK.
“While recognising that these are particularly challenging times for all its stakeholders, EPCR will continue to work with the leagues and unions so that this month’s matches can be played safely.”
Leicester Tigers are due to face Connacht in Ireland next Saturday (January 15) in Round 3 of the Heineken Champions Cup and are then scheduled to welcome French league leaders Bordeaux-Bègles to Mattioli Woods Welford Road on Saturday, January 22 (3.15pm) in Round 4, the last of the pool round fixtures.
The leading eight teams from each of the two pools will qualify for the knockout stage, with the next six progressing to the Rounds of 16 in the Challenge Cup.
EPCR have revealed that discussions are ongoing regarding the five fixtures in Round 2 of the Champions Cup and two in the Challenge Cup which were postponed due to changes in border controls between France and the UK.
