Fantastic effort says Cockerill

Six tries in a 46-16 victory over visitors Saracens took Leicester Tigers back to the top of the Guinness Premiership table and delighted acting head coach Richard Cockerill.

“It is a good win and it keeps the momentum going,” Cockerill said as Scott Hamilton (2), Louis Deacon, Dan Hipkiss, Tom Varndell and a penalty try thrilled a 16,000-plus Welford Road crowd.

"I would have liked us to be a bit more clinical in the first half. We took a 10-point lead and surrendered it. But our pressure built some fatigue in them and we took our opportunities. All in all, I’m happy with the result.

“A bonus point and 46 points in the game, I think the squad has been fantastic.

Tigers scored three tries in the closing 15 minutes to establish a comfortable advantage.

“You don’t have to win the game in the first 20 minutes, you can win a game in 80 minutes,” added Cockerill.

“We have got to learn, but that will come with time. I am just pleased we kept playing long enough and well enough to get the result from the pressure we put on them.”

Now Tigers turn their attention to a trip to face Newcastle Falcons on Friday evening before returning to Welford Road to face Sale Sharks on April 4 (5pm).
