Foden and Spencer link up for Saints

Northampton Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder has made five changes to his team for Wednesday’s Guinness Premiership fixture against Leicester Tigers at Welford Road.

After defeat at Saracens on Saturday, the Saints face a second successive away match and Mallinder is looking forward to his first East Midlands derby experience.

“It is another big game,” he said. “Welford Road is always a challenging place to go. Leicester will be fuming from losing at the weekend and will be going all out for the win.

“They have made an excellent start to the season, regardless of Friday’s result, and have quality players throughout their team, not to mention a world-class coach in Heyneke Meyer.”

Ben Foden makes his first start at scrum-half for Saints and Chris Mayor comes in at inside centre in a backline which also includes Stephen Myler, Joe Ansbro, skipper Bruce Reihana and last season’s record-breaking try-scorer Chris Ashton.

Carlos Spencer partners Foden at half-back, while the forward pack includes Lions prop Tom Smith and summer signing Ignacio Fernandez Lobbe.

Centre Nils Mordt could make his first-team debut from the replacements’ bench.

Tickets are on sale now from the Tigers ticket office hotline on 08701 28 34 30, online or call in at Welford Road.
