Ford and May react to awards doubles

Leicester Tigers Player of the Year George Ford concedes that he would happily swap individual awards for team trophies.

Ford picked up the Supporters’ Player of the Year prize at last week’s Awards Dinner at Welford Road, having already been named Player of the Season by his team-mates.

He has also picked up the Premiership’s Golden Boot for his total of 221 points during the league campaign.

The fly-half spoke to LTTV alongside England and Tigers team-mate Jonny May, whose crucial score against Newcastle Falcons in Round 19 bagged him the Supporters’ and Sponsors’ Try of the Year awards.

“It’s obviously an honour to win it, but individual awards in a team sport like rugby don’t mean too much in my opinion,” Ford said after collecting his trophy.

“I’d rather be challenging for team trophies and that’s what it’s all about. I’d swap it any day of the week to be doing that.”

May, who has scored 11 times for Tigers in domestic action this season, added: “[The Newcastle game] was probably the biggest game of the season, so it was an important try to score, and I’m just pleased that I could contribute to the team.”
