Gallery | Tigers host historic women’s fixture

Mattioli Woods Welford Road hosted the first women’s match since the launch by Tigers of a women’s and girls’ rugby programme, with more than 40 players involved in a trial fixture at the stadium on Saturday.

This fixture features two teams of invited players wearing Tigers club colours for the first time, with admission to supporters via donation to the women's rugby programme.

Supporters on the day also helped to raise £700 towards the Leicester Tigers Women and Girls Programme.via donations on the gate, on a day that marks the next step of the club’s development.

Vicky Macqueen, head of the programme, said: “I’d like to thank all of the players and the supporters who came to watch. It was a great start for us to have so many players involved and now they’ve had an opportunity to play at this famous stadium.

“It’s another step on the path we are taking in encouraging women and girls into the game.

“We are all about inspiring young girls to give rugby a try, and also cement a pathway from grassroots to performance level for women and girls, and this is the start of the journey.”
