Gigena temporarily departs Leicester Tigers

Facundo Gigena has left the United Kingdom on a temporary basis, due to the conclusion of the Argentine’s working visa.

The Argentina international remains a member of the Tigers 2019/20 squad and is expected to re-join his Leicester team mates in the East Midlands after obtaining a new visa.

During this period, Gigena will be unavailable for selection.

Speaking about the temporary loss of the 25-year-old, Tigers head coach Geordan Murphy said: “The timing is not ideal, with Ellis [Genge] away with England during their Six Nations campaign.”

“However, we are fortunate to have the experience of Greg Bateman and a versatile, international option in Nephi Leatigaga available in the loose-head position, as well as some exciting, young talent in the No.1 shirt coming through the ranks.

James Whitcombe is currently in camp with England Under-20s, while Keston Lines has shown strong improvement in the development squad and Owen Hills is on his way back from injury.

“They all present viable options as backups for us, as well as the chance to potentially continue their introduction to senior rugby and progression through the club’s ranks.”

Earlier this week, Tigers also confirmed the signing of front-rower Charlie Capps on a short-term loan from Glasgow Warriors.
