Glance backwards and focus forwards

We all love history - especially when it's a history as glorious as ours - but the start of a new season is also a time to look forward.Notice The Tig says ‘also’ because one of the delights of being a fan is being able to recall events and players of the past. A rain-drenched game here, a try-fest there, a remarkable late fightback, a dodgy decision from a referee, they’re all part of the chat around a game dredged from memory banks of supporters.   We’ve all got our favourites, we’ll describe a particular game in great detail and know the exact stats of a player. That history breeds culture, and culture is what the Tigers have thrived on for as long as anyone can remember.   There is also the future, and a strong degree of how much that past plays in it.   It is extremely tough, for example, to compare the giants of yesterday’s game with the stars of today, though we all do it.   The past also brings its own pressure, or its own motivation if you’d rather look at that way, on the future. There is not one of us in the Tigers Family, for instance, that does not yearn for a return to a Premiership Final that bit more now that we’ve been denied it in the last two years, or desperately desires another European run after missing out last season.   We all yearn too for the sight of Manu is full flight, back to full fitness and firing on all cylinders, purely because we haven’t been able to see it for the last 10 months or so.   We all want an unbeaten season at Welford Road because we can recall one in the past, we want those big European nights under the floodlights on our home ground because they’ve created so many memories in past years, we all want to see the captain lift some silverware.   A history of success breeds that kind of yearning for the future. And don’t we just love it that way!
