Guinness Premiership sets attendance record

Attendances for this weekend's Guinness Premiership fixtures broke the all time record for a single round of matches as 108,467 people watched the Race to Twickenham begin.

The previous record of 104,415 was achieved in round one of the 2006/7 season.

Premier Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty said: “It was great to be able to focus on matters on the field this weekend and the clubs and our supporters didn’t disappoint.

“A record attendance at the London Double Header and strong crowds around the country allowed us to record our best ever attendances for a single round. I think it shows even in these tough times that the Guinness Premiership can offer great value for money family entertainment.”

Tigers will set a new record for a league game at Welford Road at the opening home fixture of this season against Newcastle Falcons on Saturday, September 19.

The new Caterpillar Stand will open for the first time and already ticket sales have exceeded last season’s capacity of 17,498.

To book your place at the Newcastle Falcons game, or at any fixture at Welford Road this season, visit the ticket office, telephone 0844 856 1880 or go online.
